En appell til samvittigheten: Stopp Donald Trumps grusomme angrep mot det cubanske folket

USAs president Donald Trump forsøker å fremkalle hungersnød på Cuba. Massesult og menneskelig lidelse på Cuba er målet med Trumps siste ‘haste’-presidentordre som forhindrer Cuba, en øynasjon, fra å importere olje eller noen andre energikilder som er nødvendige for å overleve. Det er et kynisk og grovt påskudd for å distrahere opinionen fra problemene hjemme, som vekker masseprotester, og som vi har sett med Venezuela, en forløper til et ulovlig militært angrep.

Vi, sammen med millioner av mennesker i USA og rundt om i verden, fordømmer denne umenneskelige handlingen mot Cubas folk. Dette er ikke en politikk for nasjonal sikkerhet; det er en bevisst handling av økonomisk krigføring rettet mot å kvele en hel befolkning.

President Barack Obama igangsatte et viktig arbeid for å normalisere forholdet mellom USA og Cuba. De to landene gjenåpnet sine ambassader etter at de hadde vært stengt i 50 år. Folk i USA, Cuba og hele den vestlige halvkule hilste dette velkommen som en slutt på den anakronistiske kaldkrigs-politikken som hadde dominert forholdet.

Men Trump har snudd den veien Obama-administrasjonen begynte på. Hans presidentordre av 29. januar stempler Cuba som en ‘uvanlig og ekstraordinær trussel’ mot USA. Dette er åpenbart usant, men det gir et påskudd for å pålegge alvorlige økonomiske straffer mot ethvert land som forsøker å levere olje eller handle med Cuba.

Konsekvensene av den nye presidentordren vil måles i menneskelig lidelse:

• Familier vil bli stående uten strøm til lys, kjøling og matlaging.
• Sykehus vil møte umulige valg, med risiko for stenging av avdelinger og avslutning av kritisk behandling.
• Distribusjonen av mat og medisiner vil bli lammet.
• De mest sårbare—barn, eldre og syke—vil bære hovedbyrden av denne grusom­heten.

Denne politikken er samvittighetsløs. Den forverrer en humanitær krise vi selv har skapt. Cuba utgjør ingen trussel mot USA. Å sulte en befolkning til underkastelse er ikke diplomati; det er en form for terrorisme.

Vi oppfordrer alle mennesker med samvittighet til å avvise denne grusomheten og kreve en umiddelbar slutt på blokaden. I over 30 år har FNs generalforsamling stemt årlig, med overveldende flertall, for å fordømme USAs embargo mot Cuba. Trump må gjennomføre sin utenrikspolitikk med respekt for ønskene til USAs folk og i samsvar med internasjonal lov.

Vi, USAs folk, ønsker å ha normale forhold til Cuba, behandle Cuba med likeverd og respekt, og viktigst av alt å se på Cuba og det cubanske folket som våre naboer og ikke våre fiender.

A Call to Conscience: Stop Donald Trump’s Cruel Assault Against the Cuban People

US President Donald Trump is trying to induce a famine in Cuba. Mass starvation and human suffering in Cuba is the goal of Trump’s latest ’emergency’ Executive Order preventing Cuba, an island nation, from importing oil or any energy sources needed to survive. It is a cynical and crude ploy to distract public opinion from the issues at home that are eliciting mass public dissent, and as we’ve seen with Venezuela, a precursor to an illegal military attack.

We, along with millions of people in the United States and around the world, reject this inhumane act against the people of Cuba. This is not a policy of national security; it is a deliberate act of economic warfare aimed at strangling an entire population.

President Barack Obama initiated an important effort to normalize relations between the United States and Cuba. The two countries reopened their embassies after they had been closed for 50 years. People across the United States, Cuba, and the entire Western Hemisphere greeted this as a welcome end to the anachronistic Cold War policies that had dominated the relationship.

But Trump has reversed the path that the Obama administration began. His January 29 Executive Order labels Cuba an ‘unusual and extraordinary threat’ to the United States. This is obviously false, but it provides a pretext to impose severe economic penalties on any country that attempts to deliver oil or trade with Cuba.

The consequences of the new Executive Order will be measured in human suffering:

• Families will be left without power for light, refrigeration, and cooking.
• Hospitals will face impossible choices, risking the closure of wards and the suspension of critical treatments.
• The distribution of food and medicine will be paralyzed.
• The most vulnerable—children, the elderly, and the sick—will bear the brunt of this cruelty.

This policy is unconscionable. It deepens a humanitarian crisis of our own making. Cuba poses no threat to the United States. Starving a population into submission is not diplomacy; it is a form of terrorism.

We call on all people of conscience to reject this cruelty and demand an immediate end to the blockade. For over 30 years, the UN General Assembly has voted annually, with an overwhelming majority, to condemn the US embargo on Cuba. Trump must carry out his foreign policy with respect to the wishes of the people of the United States and in accordance with international law.

We, the people of the United States, want to have normal relations with Cuba, treat Cuba with equality and respect, and most importantly to see Cuba and the Cuban people as our neighbors and not our enemies.
